My Philosophy
My philosophy of education reflects the belief that every student has the capacity to grow under the support of empathy, patience and respect. I want to create an inclusive, interactive, and communicative classroom; a space where all students feel safe and confident to share their ideas in both their first and second language. For me, good teaching is about not only transferring knowledge but also developing students’ ability to learn and think, while inspiring them to believe in themselves. Learning about other perspectives and the ideas and work of Maria Montessori, Noam Chomsky, conscientious multilingual learners and Miguel De Zubiría have allowed me to make better choices about the kind of teacher I want to be.
Maria Montessori introduced me to the fundamental idea that students learn at a deeper level when they can explore and discover on their own. Montessori states, the teacher must guide not always give the answer (Güzeltaş & Türkoğlu, 2024). I plan to incorporate this method in my classroom by encouraging independent learning, hands-on opportunities, and honoring the individual pace of each child’s learning and interest. I think students must learn for not just school but for life. For Noam Chomsky, language is a natural aspect of the human mind and that Universal Grammar supports the fact that children are born with the ability to learn language (Dash, 2023). From Noam Chomsky learned I have learned that in any language class, teaching is not just about memorizing the rules of grammar. I hope to create real-life communication situations for students to discover language patterns themselves and use the language spontaneously. Miguel De Zubiría taught me the importance of people’s emotional and social needs. He believes students do not only learn with their minds but with their hearts too (Carrillo, 2023). I agree there is an obligation for educators to encourage students to create relationships with one another, collaborate and cooperate, and feel engaged and confident in the classroom.
I want to be a teacher who does not simply follow the book, but listens to her students, understands their needs, and helps them build their language knowledge with depth and meaning. I really believe that when students are comfortable, confident, and engaged, they learn more effectively, and efficiently. In the future, I hope to use these points proposed to enable my students to grow not only in their learning but as a person.
